The short version
- OurSparks is a private space for couples. What you create is shared with your partner, and with no one else unless you post it to the Couples feed.
- Chat messages and Notes are end-to-end encrypted. Only your two phones can read them. We can't.
- We don't sell your personal information, we don't share it for advertising, and there are no ads or ad trackers in OurSparks.
- Camera, microphone and location are only used when you choose a feature that needs them. Location sharing is off until you turn it on.
- You can download your data and delete your account any time, from the app.
1. Who we are
OurSparks ("OurSparks", "we", "us") makes the OurSparks app for iPhone and Android and runs oursparks.app. We decide how and why your personal information is used, so we're the "controller" of it under data protection laws such as the EU and UK GDPR, and the "business" under US state privacy laws.
This policy covers the app, the website and our support channels. To reach us about privacy, email support@oursparks.app with "Privacy" in the subject.
2. What we collect
We collect only what the app needs to work, and most of it comes straight from you.
| What | Examples | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Account | Email address, or your Apple or Google sign-in; a password hash (never the password itself); language | To create your account and keep it secure |
| Profile | Name, profile photo or avatar, birthday, relationship stage, preferences such as long distance or faith-based | To set up your space and tailor content; your birthday also confirms you're 18 or older |
| Your partner link | Who you're linked with, your SPARK code, anniversary, and in the talking stage the people you're connected to | To create and run your shared couple space |
| Content you create | Answers, chat messages, notes, photos, videos, voice notes, memories, goals, plans, countdowns, game answers, love notes, mood and status | To show it to you and your partner |
| Couples feed | Posts, captions, city or place, comments, hearts, saves, follows and reports | To run the Couples feed, if you use it |
| Calls | Who called whom, when, how long, and whether it connected; never the audio or video | To connect calls and show your call history and streak |
| Location | Your location while the app is open, only for features you use: sharing with your partner, date ideas near you, weather, pinning a memory; places read from your photos | To power those features |
| Purchases | Subscription status, plan and renewal dates (from Apple, Google and RevenueCat); never your card number | To unlock Premium for you, and for your partner where it's shared |
| Device and app | Phone model, operating system, app version, push notification and call tokens, time zone | To send notifications, ring calls, and keep the app working on your phone |
| Diagnostics | Crash reports and performance data (what happened, on which screen, app version); you choose whether crash reports are sent | To find and fix problems |
| Agreements | Which version of our Terms, this policy and the Community Guidelines you agreed to, and when | To keep a record of what you agreed to |
| Support | What you send us, and our replies | To help you |
We don't read your contacts, track your location in the background, use biometrics, or follow you across other apps and websites.
3. Sensitive information
Some things you might share in OurSparks are sensitive: details of your relationship and intimate life (for example, if you choose an intimate question level), your religious beliefs (if you turn on faith-based content), and your precise location (if you share it). We use these only to provide the features you turned on, only with your consent, and you can turn each one off at any time. We never use sensitive information to infer things about you, and we never sell or share it.
4. How we use it
- To provide OurSparks: your account, your couple space, questions, games, calls, notes, memories, plans, reminders and the Couples feed.
- To personalize content: questions and games that fit your relationship stage and the preferences you set.
- To keep people safe: enforcing our Community Guidelines, reviewing reports, screening images posted to the Couples feed, preventing fraud and abuse, and meeting legal duties such as reporting child sexual abuse material.
- To communicate with you: notifications you can turn off, account and security emails, and replies to support requests.
- To improve and fix the app: crash reports and performance data, and aggregated usage counts that don't identify you.
- To process payments: through Apple, Google and RevenueCat.
- To comply with the law and protect our rights.
We don't use your content to build advertising profiles, and we don't make decisions with legal or similarly significant effects about you by automated means alone.
5. Legal bases (EEA and UK)
| Purpose | Legal basis |
|---|---|
| Running your account and couple space, calls, payments | Performance of our contract with you |
| Sensitive information, location sharing, crash reports, optional notifications | Your consent, which you can withdraw at any time in the app |
| Safety, moderation, fraud prevention, improving the app, security | Our legitimate interests in a safe, working service, balanced against your rights |
| Legal reporting, tax records, responding to lawful requests | Legal obligation |
6. End-to-end encryption
Chat messages and Notes are encrypted on your phone before they leave it, with keys that only your two phones hold. Our servers store them only in encrypted form and we can't read them, so we also can't recover them if both of you lose your keys. Photos, videos and voice notes attached to Notes are stored with standard encryption, like the rest of your space.
Everything else in your space (answers, memories, photos, plans and so on) is encrypted in transit and at rest on Google Cloud, and shared only with your partner. Like any cloud service, our systems can technically access this data. We limit that access to a small number of authorized people with roles that match their job, only when needed to provide support you ask for, keep people safe, or comply with the law, and admin actions are recorded in an audit log.
7. Your partner and connections
- When you link, your partner sees what you share in your couple space: your answers once they've answered too, messages, memories, notes, plans, your profile and, if you turn it on, your location.
- Talking stage: you can be connected to up to five people. Each connection is its own private space. Nobody can see your other connections or what you share with them.
- If you unlink, each of you keeps your own account. Shared content stays readable to both of you for 30 days, then it's removed from the shared space.
- Your partner is responsible for what they do with what you share with them, including screenshots.
8. The Couples feed
The Couples feed is optional and public to other OurSparks users. What you post there (photos, videos, title, caption, city or place) can be seen by anyone using the app, unless you choose a narrower audience or hide a post from someone. Your partner must approve a post before it goes public.
- Comments, hearts and saves on posts are visible to the people who can see the post.
- Images posted to the feed are automatically screened for nudity and violence (using Google Cloud Vision) and can be reviewed by our moderators when reported.
- You can delete your posts and comments at any time. People can report and block one another.
9. Calls
Voice and video calls go directly from one phone to the other whenever possible, encrypted in transit (WebRTC with DTLS-SRTP). When a direct connection isn't possible, the encrypted call is relayed through Cloudflare, which can't see or hear it. We never record calls. We keep a call log (who, when, how long, whether it connected) so you can see your call history; you can clear it in the app.
To ring your phone when the app is closed, we use Apple's push service (VoIP push) on iPhone and Firebase Cloud Messaging on Android.
10. Location
- OurSparks uses your location only while the app is open, and only for features you use. It never tracks you in the background.
- Sharing with your partner is off by default. When you both turn it on, your partner can see where you are. You can turn it off any time; you can also use Incognito.
- Date ideas and weather use your approximate location or the city you choose, sent to the event, place and weather providers listed below.
- Photos: when you add a photo to a memory, the app reads the date and place stored in the photo, if any, to fill them in for you.
11. AI features
Some features use Google's Gemini AI: date and trip plans, Goal Coach plans, translating a message, and guessing where a photo was taken when the photo has no location in it. When you use one, we send only what that feature needs (for example, your city, budget and mood for a date plan, or a smaller copy of the photo for a place guess). AI suggestions can be wrong; check them before relying on them. Chat messages and Notes are never sent to AI unless you choose to translate a message.
12. Who processes your data
We use trusted providers to run OurSparks. They process data only on our instructions, or under their own privacy terms where they act independently (like Apple and Google for sign-in and payments).
| Provider | What for |
|---|---|
| Google Firebase and Google Cloud | Sign-in, database, file storage, servers, notifications, crash reports, performance data, app integrity checks, image screening, maps, places and address lookups, and Gemini AI |
| Apple | Sign in with Apple, notifications and call ringing, App Store payments |
| Google Play | Google sign-in and Google Play payments |
| RevenueCat | Keeping track of your subscription across iPhone and Android |
| Cloudflare | Relaying calls that can't connect directly |
| Mapbox | Showing maps |
| Ticketmaster, Eventbrite, OpenTripMap, OpenWeb Ninja | Finding events and places near you for date ideas |
| Open-Meteo and OpenStreetMap | Weather and address lookups |
| YouTube and Vimeo | Playing videos you choose in Watch Together |
| Spotify and Apple Music | Showing songs you add |
| Our email delivery provider | Sending account and support emails |
We may also disclose information if the law requires it, to protect someone's safety, to investigate abuse, or as part of a merger or acquisition (in which case this policy keeps applying to your data, and we'll tell you first).
13. No selling, no ads
We don't sell your personal information, we don't "share" it for cross-context behavioral advertising, and we don't show ads. There's nothing to opt out of, but we also honor Global Privacy Control signals.
14. How long we keep it
| Data | Kept |
|---|---|
| Your account and content | Until you delete it or your account. After you delete your account, it's erased within 30 days and from backups within 90 days. |
| Shared space after unlinking | Readable to both of you for 30 days, then removed |
| Couples feed posts and comments | Until you delete them or your account |
| Call history | Until you clear it or delete your account |
| Crash reports and diagnostics | Only as long as needed to fix the problem |
| Records of what you agreed to, safety reports, and data we must keep by law | As long as the law requires or as needed to handle legal claims, which can be after your account is deleted |
15. Security
We protect your data with encryption in transit and at rest, end-to-end encryption for chat and Notes, access limited by role and logged, and a security program guided by the NIST Cybersecurity Framework. If a breach affects your personal information, we'll tell you and the authorities as the law requires. Read more on our Security page.
16. International transfers
OurSparks is run from the United States, and our providers may process data in the US and other countries. When we transfer personal information from the EEA, the UK or Switzerland, we rely on safeguards such as the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses and the UK Addendum.
17. Your rights
Wherever you live, you can:
- See and download your data: in the app, under Profile → Settings → Privacy & Account → Download my data.
- Correct it: edit your profile and content in the app, or ask us.
- Delete it: delete individual items in the app, or your whole account (see Delete your account).
- Withdraw consent: turn off location sharing, faith-based or intimate content, notifications and crash reports in the app.
If you're in the EEA or UK, you can also object to or restrict some uses, and complain to your local data protection authority. We answer requests within one month (extendable where the law allows). To make a request, email support@oursparks.app from the email on your account; we may need to confirm it's you. We'll never treat you differently for using your rights.
18. US state privacy rights
Residents of California and other states with privacy laws (including Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, Utah, Texas, Oregon and others) have the right to know what personal information we collect, use and disclose, to access, correct and delete it, to get a portable copy, and to opt out of sales, "sharing" for targeted ads, and profiling. We don't sell or share personal information, or profile people in ways that produce legal or similarly significant effects. We use sensitive personal information only to provide the features you ask for. You or an authorized agent can make a request by emailing us; we'll verify it and answer within 45 days. If we decline, you can appeal by replying to our answer.
The categories of information we collect are listed in section 2, the sources are you, your partner, your device and the providers in section 12, and the purposes are in section 4.
19. Children
OurSparks is only for people 18 and older. We don't knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If we learn that someone under 18 has an account, we delete it. If you believe a child is using OurSparks, tell us at support@oursparks.app. See also our Child Safety Standards.
20. Changes to this policy
When we make important changes, we'll update the date at the top and ask you to review and agree in the app before you continue. Earlier versions are available on request.
